My father was a Rotarian – lunch with his buddies every Wednesday at noon, tossing horseshoes at the annual Rotary picnic while drinking beer, “bring your sons to Rotary day,” the Christmas party for kids, fishing trips, Rotary trips to Reno to gamble, and occassionally a Saturday project to build picnic tables for the park. When my family went on vacation, my father carefully mapped out where and when we would stop so that he could attend a club meeting and maintain his perfect attendance – every week for 27 years.
I was invited to join Rotary three times. I said no twice, but consented after the third invitation – with lots of hesitation. I never “planned” my life the way you’re supposed to if you want to be sucessful. Good thing. If I had, joining Rotary or any other service club wouldn’t have been part of the plan.
It turned out that when I joined Rotary, I was making a life-altering decision. Through Rotary and the support it provides me, I can help improve the world. I’m part of an organization that’s nearly finished with eradicating polio. I’ve been a member of Rotary teams charged with identifying the best way to improve water and sanitation in Africa, and now people have clean water and a better future. I’ve had the joy of speaking to thousands of Rotarians about how they can make a difference, and they are making a difference.
