“Awareness without action is worthless.” — “Dr. Phil” McGraw

When I was preparing for my year as District Governor, my wife, Sharon, asked me what my vision was for the year. When the year began, it hadn’t fully formed.
I’d heard many stories of Rotary’s work, was privileged to have participated in several local and international projects, and hoped that through my District Governor presentation others could be inspired to serve. I also knew that others could tell the stories of Rotary’s service better than I, and finding Rotarians to do this was easy. Editing the stories and integrating them into my presentation was much more difficult. Fortunately, I had a fellow Rotarians, such as Harold Mondol, who edited the videos, and both he and DGE Terry Allen to provide feedback.

As I met and talked with hundreds of Rotarians, spoke to clubs, edited my presentation, received feedback, reflected on what I hoped to communicate, edited the presentation more, and met and spoke with more Rotarians, I became increasingly aware of what Rotary meant to me, and what my vision was:

I want every Rotarian in our District to have a greater awareness of all that our great organization is, understand how they can serve, and be able to tell a story about how Rotary helped them change the life of someone else, and in the process, changed their own life.

I’m realistic to know that for now some will prefer to sit on the sidelines and watch others do Rotary’s work. My hope is that with time, they will become inspired, act, help others, and be able to tell their stories too.
